How to measure your walls for wallpaper
Measuring a wall for wallpaper takes about five minutes. Getting it wrong means a second order, a different batch, and a seam that doesn't match. Here's how to do it right.
1. Measure the width. Run the tape along the wall from corner to corner. If you're papering more than one wall, measure each one separately and write the numbers down.
2. Measure the height. Go from ceiling to floor, not from the top of the trim. Floors and ceilings are rarely level, so check a few spots and round up to the next inch.
3. Don't deduct doors and windows. The paper you'd save gets used up in trimming around frames and corners. Measure the full wall.
4. Check the pattern repeat. It's printed on the roll label. A large pattern has to line up at every seam, so each strip wastes more paper. Bigger repeat, more rolls.
5. Add 10-15% to your total. Edges get trimmed at the ceiling and baseboard, and one bad cut can cost you a strip. The extra covers both.
6. Check the batch (LOT) number. Every roll is printed in a batch, and shades can shift slightly between batches. Make sure every roll you buy has the same number, and order everything at once.
